Jo Swinson supports Credit Unions at the Post Office

Jo Swinson, MP for East Dunbartonshire, has backed a move by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Credit Unions to make credit union services available at Post Offices across the country.

At a recent event in Parliament, Jo Swinson has pledged to support a link-up scheme between the co-operative, not-for-profit credit unions like Kirkintilloch Credit Union in East Dunbartonshire and its customers, but also Post Offices, which would benefit from new income. The proposal would place credit union services at all Post Office counters, making them more visible and accessible to existing as well as new potential customers.

This move would add to measures recently introduced by the November Department for Business, Innovation and Skills statement to allow people in Glasgow and South Lanarkshire to collect their credit union loans at post offices through the Post Office's 'Payout' technology.

Commenting, Jo Swinson MP said:

"Credit unions provide valuable help to many people East Dunbartonshire, including those on the lowest incomes. As well as traditional loans and savings, local Credit Unions like Kirkintilloch Credit Union offer current accounts, ISAs and mortgages, allowing customers to manage their money on fair terms. Making these services available through trusted local Post Offices would cost relatively little whilst improving access for all and helping to secure the future of the local sub-post office."
