Commenting on the news that the Scottish Carbon Capture and Storage Centre is to design a blueprint to ensure that carbon capture and storage technology (CCS) can be implemented effectively around the world, Liberal Democrat Energy spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:
"Scotland is in an excellent position to be a world leader in carbon capture technology. Taking responsibility for developing this blueprint is an accolade of which Scotland should be rightly proud.
"This type of technology can be a major component in our fight against climate change, but it must be developed on existing fossil fuel power stations, such as Longannet.
"It is not a get-out-of-fail free card for sanctioning new build stations, like the plant proposed at Hunterston. This would simply result in a huge increase in harmful emissions and Scottish Ministers must make clear that this is not acceptable."
