Commenting on Ofgem's reform of energy network regulations, Scottish Liberal Democrat Energy spokesman Liam McArthur said:
"This announcement from Ofgem is encouraging. Acknowledging the benefits of supporting a smarter grid and providing real incentives for businesses to use energy in an efficient manner are certainly steps in the right direction.
"Yet while this move reflects a welcome recognition of what is needed to deliver a low carbon revolution, concerns remain about Ofgem's remit and whether it is entirely fit for purpose to meet the challenges ahead.
"Ofgem's charging regime continues to penalise those seeking to generate in remoter areas and around our shores. Add to that the shortcomings of our grid infrastructure, and it is not difficult to see the scale of these challenges.
"Scotland's greatest renewable energy resources are to be found around our coast and in our island areas, a fact that must be properly reflected in Ofgem's approach going forward. After all, if Scotland's renewables potential can be harnessed effectively, a low carbon economy will surely follow."
