Jo Swinson MP is encouraging people in East Dunbartonshire to be aware of the key symptoms of bowel cancer.
Bowel cancer is the most common form of cancer in Britain. In East Dunbartonshire alone an estimated 3,500 people will develop bowel cancer in their lifetime. Yet Britain remains among the slowest in Europe to diagnose bowel cancer, leading to thousands of preventable deaths.
As part of Bowel Cancer Faster Diagnosis Week, Jo Swinson is encouraging her constituents to get to know the key symptoms, to get involved in the NHS screening programme for bowel cancer and to act quickly if they are concerned.
Commenting, Jo Swinson MP said:
"Bowel cancer is surprisingly common, and it is estimated that it kills more than half of those who develop it in East Dunbartonshire. Yet bowel cancer is curable if it is recognised early enough. The biggest problem is that people aren't prepared to talk about it, and it gets little publicity compared to other forms of cancer.
"That is why I want to take this opportunity to urge constituents to get to know the symptoms and to get involved in the NHS postal screening programmes, which could save their lives."

In Scotland, NHS bowel cancer screening kits are being delivered to people between 60 and 69 (and 70-74 on request) now.
