Jim Hume MSP, Liberal Democrat MSP for the South of Scotland, has just finished a residents' survey in Rowanburn, near Canonbie to determine local feeling on the future of the Lang Sandy statue which is slowly deteriorating.

The MSP has been working in conjunction with Rowanburn Amenities Group to find a solution to the problem of the decaying wooden statue.

Jim Hume MSP said:

"Lang Sandy is a prominent and historic focal point in the community and everyone who responded to my survey stated that they would like the statue saved or recreated in some way.

"Having the statue removed with no replaced was simply not an option and many people remarked that the place would not be the same without Lang Sandy. There is clearly a great deal of fondness for him.

"A number of suggestions were made which included treating the statue with chemicals and making a new one from a cast set with a more durable material. Some people even suggested some sort of carving on local stone.

"I have shared these ideas with the Rowanburn Amenities Group and hope that we can get Lang Sandy back to his former glory before too long."
